The Madison Job Search Presentation

The Madison Job Search Presentation I arrived in Madison, Wisconsin last night about an hour after dinner closed at our hotel.  Drove through a torrential rain which kind of felt like driving through a waterfall for the last hour or so.  It was crazy stressful/fun. Why hasnt anyone ever told me about Madison, Wisconsin?  This place is BEAUTIFUL!  The green landscape is overwhelming (Ive lived in a desert for the last 22 years, from northern Mexico to Idaho to Utah, Ive missed all of the green, trees, and oxygen). Apparently, there are thirteen beaches in Madison.  The capital building is the second largest in the country, second only to the White House.  The people are delightfully nice.  You are right that Wisconsin knows and likes its cheese, but did you know that Wisconsin is a huge paper producer?  According to the Wisconsin Paper Council, Wisconsin is the #1 papermaking state in the U.S.  Utah doesnt even have a paper council. Anyway, Ill have more on my speaking tour later.  You can see where Ill be over the next month here. I am not getting my head in the game.  Tonight I speak to a bunch of people interested in their career.  They had to close registration because the room is at capacity.  And there might be people who didnt register but just show up.  Like in Minneapolis, one year when I presented at Right Management people where all along the walls, and even in the halls. I know it was uncomfortable. Im not sharing this because Im awesome.  Im sharing this because people want to know. They want to know there are options.  They want to know what to do.  They want to know that what they are going through is okay.  They want to know that theyll get through this.  They want to know there is hope. A few years ago I was at lunch with Dick Bolles and his wife, after a presentation in Danville, CA, and he said Jason, your message and my message are the same. I was honored and intrigued. I was curious to know what he thought my message was (he was at my presentation only an hour earlier).  He elaborated: Ours is a message of hope. Read my immediate thoughts on it in this 2010 blog post. Do you want to know what Im talking about in a few hours?  Im talking about hope. And options.  And your career.  Its a message I have shared in Boston, and San Francisco, and Tampa and Seattle, in Albuquerque and Houston, and Twin Cities and San Diego, in Salt Lake City and Phoenix.  And tonight, I share it in Madison, Wisconsin. In my job search I had lost hope.  And it was miserable, and I was ineffective.  I want YOU to have hope, and get out of misery, and get results.  That is my message. Working for an SME a recruiters perspective.

Working for an SME a recruiters perspective. The big graduate recruiters are always going to be a great source of job and internship opportunities, and for some students their job search will begin and end with the Times Top 100. But the real graduate job market not just the one represented in the media  is far more diverse with over 40% of UK graduates working in graduate level jobs in SMEs. Surprised? Well, heres someone who isnt: Rebecca Simkiss of Simkiss Guy Recruitment, an SME located in the Birmingham area. Rebecca is a very experienced recruiter who understands the lure of the big corporates, but also knows the benefit of taking the road less travelled. As a professional who has spent the last 10 years (pretty much my whole professional career to date in fact), in the recruitment industry, I have met, interviewed and advised hundreds of graduates. They are all full of enthusiasm and excited about starting their professional career. The on-trend career of the moment has shifted somewhat during this time. In the early days it usually tended to be Finance, Law and Property that was the desired sector. A few years’ later saw a surge in those who felt that Media, Marketing, Communications and PR assured the best path. Fast forward to now and we see a growing number of graduates looking to work for entrepreneurial, dynamic businesses that may have a number of cross-sector specialisms. Graduate schemes: good option, not the only option One thing that has remained constant though. More often than not, these very worthy career aspirations then lead to the mention of global brands, FTSE 100s and huge PLCs. If sights are not set on the traditional graduate scheme, then at least the opportunity of working for these prestigious, high profile organisations will give the best head start in a competitive market, right? Well not necessarily. Want to know why? Then read on. Now, before I become somewhat controversial and potentially offend a number of my clients, many of whom are the said market leading, global PLCs. These organisations offer outstanding career opportunities for their staff. And yes, a big brand business on a CV will certainly catch my eye. However, I will always be a champion of the SME. Why? Well to start with, the traditional graduate route wasn’t the option I took. SME’s is all I have ever known. I now own one, so I have to say that it hasn’t turned out too badly for me. SMEs can unlock the door of opportunity Opportunity, experience, progression, a dynamic, fast paced career where I would be challenged, where I would meet people and, of course, a salary that reflect my commitment, loyalty and dedication. That’s what I was looking for. I didn’t mind the type of business, it just so happened that an SME gave me everything I was looking for, and more. It then opened a whole world of opportunity that I was not expecting and I grabbed it with both hands. So, why work for an SME? Every business is different, but for me, the opportunity of being part of a team where the Managing Director knew my name, was a bit different for a start. Although I had a clearly defined role in my first SME, there were opportunities to be involved in so many elements of the business. Sales, Marketing, Events, Training, Business Development, Communication, HR, Account Management, Compliance, Research, Projects, Law, the list is pretty exhaustive.   Of course, some parts of my role appealed to me more than others. But at least I had the opportunity to experience a truly diverse job that was definitely not your typical 9 5. I could see the impact that my efforts were making to the bottom line of the business. My experience broadened, my skills expanded alongside my appetite to do more. Looking for a chance to shine? SME’s by their very nature, tend to be the best place to have the opportunity of trying as many facets of your skills as possible. And if you are looking for a chance to shine, then it can be easier to stand out from the crowd and have your efforts recognised. It’s not an easier option at all. You’ll work just as hard as your peers in their graduate schemes. The difference will be the fact that there is just that little but more flexibility in an SME. The majority of SMEs are growing enterprises and so this gives you an opportunity to grow and develop your skills in line with the business. Specialising in a particular field is fantastic, but it is also fine to not know what you want to do after you complete your degree. It may not have the glitz of the grad scheme title, but working as a team administrator in an SME may open more doors  and career opportunities for you than you can ever imagine. *This post was contributed by Rebecca Simkiss,  SimkissGuy Recruitment and Chair of Birmingham Future’s Development Committee

How to Write a Curriculum and What You Need To Include

How to Write a Curriculum and What You Need To IncludeResume, curriculum writing is the process of developing and formatting a professional resume. Before you begin to write your resume, it is important to plan out your content and organize the information in order to be more efficient with the writing process. The plan must include everything from what information is required to which specific skills are needed to how to best prepare for a job interview. To ensure you have everything needed in order to write a resume, it is important to also complete courses in composition or course work related to your field. It is also a good idea to join a resume writing organization where you can work on your resume. These organizations can be found online. In order to know how you will approach the writing process of your resume, it is a good idea to learn some of the basics of resume writing. By taking the time to learn how to structure your content, you can be sure that the content is clear and easy to understand. The content is then presented to the reader in a manner that the reader will want to read on.There are several ways to do resume curriculum writing. You can create a formal resume; create a technical resume; write a skill resume; write a career plan; or create a general resume. Each resume curriculum will differ, but the main difference between these resume curricula is the formatting, as well as the process of writing the resume. When writing an informal format resume, the most common format is a single document. However, when writing technical or career level curriculum, you will need to provide the details of each skill or academic achievement. These two resumes require two separate documents.Another way to do resume curriculum writing is a set of career plans or curriculum outline. A career plan is an organized outline of the major career plans of the applicant. A curriculum outline provides a detailed description of the main goals and direction of a student' s education and outlines the academic focus of a particular career program.Writing a curriculum plan can take up a lot of time and research. This is why you should practice it before you start working on your full length curriculum plan. In resume curriculum writing, most individuals will provide the main goals of their programs. These goals can include a description of the curriculum, a summary of the major goals and learning objectives, as well as a summary of the major accomplishments of the individual. The student must organize their curriculum to make sure they are providing a wide range of information. In resume curriculum writing, students should know how to summarize their academic achievements and achieve specific goals through their education. Students should avoid making their curriculum too complicated.

10 New Reasons You Have To Quit Your Job In 2017 - CareerEnlightenment.com

F) THE ACCESS ECONOMY == WHAT WILL  HAPPEN?When I spoke to Chip Conley, head of Hospitality at Airbnb, he used one phrase which changed my opinion on the entire economy.“Nobody is sharing,” he said, “It’s not the sharing economy. It’s the Access Economy.”This is the business model of every business in the access economy:1) Some people have an excess of an item (e.g. empty rooms, empty car seats, etc).2) Some people want access to that excess.3) And then there is a platform in the middle to help with discovery, transactions, problems, mediation, etc (Airbnb, Uber, etc).If you brainstorm where there is excess in your life (even an excess of knowledge that others might not have) you can create a business in this model.Economics Lesson: What happens when people have access to things they never had access to before?Supply goes up. Demand remains basically the same.So Economics 101. Price eventually goes down. Which means deflation for the first time in 100 years.Warren Buffett once said that deflation is the worst thing that can happen to the economy. If prices fall, people wait until they get even lower, so demand goes down, so prices fall more. So less jobs are needed, so less people have money, and then demand goes down even more while supply gets higher than ever.So prices go even lower.Death spiral.Elon Musk recently addressed this. He said we might need UBI: “Universal Basic Income” for everyone to handle the economic collapse that will result.Maybe. Who knows? Nobody knows.G) YOUR BOSS HAS TO FIRE  YOUIf you create $1 in value, and you have a boss, who has a boss, who has a boss, who has a board, who has shareholders….then how much of that dollar do you get to keep?Well, now we know the answer. In the 1960s, a CEO might make five times the average employee. Now a CEO makes 200 times the average employee. The answer: you get none of the dollar and the CEO gets all of it.And what is that dollar? It’s money you created for the company. More of it should be yours. But every day less of it is yours.Who will get fired first? The slave drivers or the slaves? We know the answer. Executives took billions of dollars in bonuses when the banks got $600 billion in bailout money from the US government in 2009.And everyone else got fired. This is not a political opinion. Or a suggestion on how things could have been different. But it’s this: now we know the answer.H) YOU DON’T NEED THE JOB TO BE  HAPPYDepression is highest in fully employed, first world countries. The two highest countries for depression? France and the United States. We simply were not made to work 60 hours a week. Archaeologists figure that our paleo ancestors “worked” maybe 12 hours a week. And then they would play, in order to keep up the skills needed to hunt and forage, etc.Why is work depressing? Not all of these reasons but maybe some of them.Being bossed around by people we don’t respect.Being forced to be friends just because they share our cubicle wal ls and hear all of our whispered pleadings with romantic partners as we try to be as quiet as possible.MeetingsSeeing the 80/20 rule in action where 20% of the employees create 80% of the value and the other 80% just barely (desperately, fearfully) survive.Being mandated by an 800 page guidebook how you can talk to people of the opposite sex or of different skin colors.Seeing corporate political agendas rule over financial realities and not being able to say anything about it for fear of being fired.Spending 6am to 7pm getting ready for work, commuting to work, working, commuting back, too tired to move when you return home.Falling in love, getting rejected, and seeing her every day and then crying in my cubicle.Or maybe that last one was just me. A lot of crying.Jobs are not so great. And they cause a lot of suffering. And you don’t really need them. Bear with me.I) YOU WERE MEANT FOR SOMETHING ELSEI needed to find out what I truly loved doing. For awhile I did it. But then I got scared. I had a mortgage. I had two kids. I had people who depended on me. And I was afraid of slipping back in lifestyle. It took me a long time to “right” myself. To give myself permission to say, “my hands were meant for something else, my life can have a larger purpose than I originally thought.”It was every day reminding myself of this. It was every day trying to sneak in moments of creativity. And of purpose.A job might be that higher purpose. But, as seen above, it’s not so clear. And things are changing. It’s not whether you chose to change. Things ARE changing and it’s how we deal with it.At my worst moments I would get so depressed I couldn’t get out of bed to get ready for work. And that was with a job I actually liked. It was worse with other jobs. All I knew for myself is that I wanted to jump out of bed excited every morning. And a job wasn’t doing it for me. And I had to figure out what would.J) JOB WON’T CREATE WELL-BEING. BUT THIS  WILL:And this will help you to find the things you are passionate about. And how to make money from them. This is not the how-to. This is the direction.Every day improve:RelationshipsCompetenceFreedomTaking small steps in each of the above allows you to still make a living while we live in “The Shift” but get your Evil Plans ready for when it happens.Every day write down the things that excited you as a kid, and still excite you now. First steps to try to engage in them. Many people say, “But I can’t do both.” They insist on their prison cells!Rule #1: When confronted with two choices: do both. There’s always a way to take the first step in a side idea.Always have an EVIL PLAN.Every day list ten possible evil plans. Give it six months of doing that every day.Consulting you can do, a gig you can do, take online courses and build skills, think of books to write, or businesses to build.Skills and ideas are the new currency. Not certificates and titles.I had to learn how to start trusting mysel f again. That I had it inside me to fulfill my dreams, to find the things I love, to do them. This is what I meant by “choose yourself”.You do your job. AND you do your evil plan. The evil plan will win in the long run.You won’t quit your job and find the answer from a single bullet point. No one article will tell you the destination. But it can tell you the direction. The exact reasons that you need to quit your job, are the reasons you will find new opportunities that will be more exciting than ever before.Technology is made FOR you. But only if you choose to use it.There’s more opportunities to create side opportunities than ever before. There’s more ways to express your visions than ever before. There are more ways to “have a purpose” than ever before.Just by reading this, you are ready for it. I’m not selling anything. I’m not trying to convince you of anything. But your hands were made to create. Do it.
